Lauren's London Sports pattern uses flying geese as part of the 8 pointed star. Using two fabrics, you cut squares in two different sizes. To make four Flying Geese with a finished size of 5cm x 10cm ( 2" x 4").

  • Cut the main square (Fabric A) 3cm (1 1/4") bigger than the finished size of the block. (the same dimensions as a Quarter Square Triangle)
  • Cut the small squares (Fabric B) 2.2cm (7/8") bigger than the finished size of the block (the same dimensions as a Half Square Triangle.)
  • For other sizes the 'magic' formula is cut to the small squares half the size of the large square and add 3cm (1/4")

Quick Pieced Method

A quick pieced method is:

  • Mark up the 2 diagonals on the right side of the large square with a marking pen, pencil or chalk.
  • Mark up 1 diagonal of the wrong side of each of the small squares with a marking pen, pencil or chalk.
  • With the large square right side up, pin two small squares to the opposite corners of the large sqaure- right sides together matching the diagonal lines and sides.
  • Trim off the corners where they meet at the centre.
  • Stitch away from the drawn lines along both sides, corner to corner.
  • Cut square in half along marked diagonal line to create two pieces.
  • Press small triangles and seam allowances away from the large triangle.

Cut 1 x 5 1/4" square of Fabric 1 and cut 4 x 2 7/8" squares of Fabric 2. Mark up the two diagonals on the right side of the large square with marking pen, pencil or chalk. Mark up one diagonal of the wrong side of each of the small squares with a marking pen, pencil or chalk.

With the large square right side up, pin two small squares to opposite corners of the large square- right sides together matching the diagonal lines and sides. Trim off the corners where they meet at the centre.

  • Take one of the halves and position a small square at the remaining corner of the larger square- right sides together- carefully matching the marked line, finger press the two sewn triangles out of the way and again stitch a seam along both sides of the marked line.

  •  Cut along the marked line and press small triangles (Fabric B) away from Fabric A to create Flying Geese unit.

For other sizes the 'magic' formula is to cut the small squares half the size of the large square and add 6cm (1/4").
