Using Bindings
There are several types of binding techniques that can be used to finish off a quilt. The main ones are Square Corners, or Mitred Edge. For some projectsan alternative way to finish the edge of the quilt is to turn in and stitch the top and backing fabrics or use a larger piece of backing to fold over onto the top as a form of self-binding.
- Always measure the quilt for binding lengths by measuring across the middle and tropics to make it fit.
- Fold the length of binding in half and find the centre point of the quilt edge and pin the binding in place, gently easing any excess quilt as you go.
- Bindings can be cut on the straight of the fabric with bias cuts usually more suitable for curved quilts.
For a decorative edge use piping (cord covered with fabric.)
