Preparing your fabric

When you start a quilt, think about what it will be used for and a suitable fabric. If it is to be washed frequently, then 100% cotton is better and ideally washed and pressed before cutting to allow for shrinkage and colour fastness.

To check for colour fastness; the rinse water should run clear or dampen and place on white cotton fabric piece and press. If dye comes through then repeat washing or replace it with another fabric. Plain fabrics with strong colours such as red are more prone to bleeding.
