Hanging your Quilt

When you want to display your quilt, at home or at an exhibition, the most common way is by using a wooden or metal rod threaded through a hanging sleeve to the quilt back. This size of the sleeve is determined by the width of your quilt- you need to cut a piece that is about 5cm (2") shorted than the width and at least 21cm (8 1/2") for a 10cm (4") deep sleeve.

To stitch this in place at the same time as the binding:

  • Turn in the raw edges on the sides, right sides together and stitch, press and turn out.
  • Fold the piece lengthwise with wrong sides together and tack to backing with the binding on top.
  • After stitching slip stitch the bottom seam in place, keeping the sleeve with some "give", not flat to enable the hanging rod to go through.
